when you start building muscle (no matter where), it'll aid in the fat-burning process. In this case, the bodies ability to burn fat throughout the body (or lack of targetted fat burning), will help reduce your stomach. Also, most exercises you do require some sort of core stability, which in turn, works the abs to some degree.

If you build muscle it won't effect your abs directly but your body will burn more calories per day.

Situps won't reduce fat you have to eat a calorie deflict to burn fat. Situps and other abs excercises will build muscle and tone but it will still be under a layer of fat.
