Thumbs up DDR for weight loss

Morning everyone,

My favorite resource for DDR fitness apparently is being hosed by spam.

So! I had to find another one - if you have DDR and use it for weight loss

Getupmove.com - Home

seems to be pretty good. The main site, Welcome to Get Up Move! , was launched in June 2004 to promote the benefits of using dance video games for physical and emotional fitness.

My kids still love doing DDR; I got it for my family two holiday seasons ago. I'm also considering the WII, but would like to see a martial arts game for it first....

Enjoy,

Barbara

Ddr!

I've found that playing Dance Dance Revolution for an hour a couple times a week really helps in terms of losing weight. It's so fun that you don't even realize you're exercising, you just want to get a high score! I lost about ten pounds in a month just doing this, and cutting back slightly on portion size. Unfortunately I've gained the weight back since then, but it was my fault, not the game's! I recommend trying this out, it's fun and it works.

Sorry if this has been posted before, I didn't find anything in search.

I lost about 10lbs doing DDR, but I gained it back too ><

I can still play up to 8 feet

DDR rocks! We got it for our daughters for Christmas this year. They love it, and we do too! Unfortunately some of the songs/videos are a tad skanky, but most are pretty good. Great way to blast fat!

ABBA
(Yes, I am waiting for the 1970s/80s version of DDR so I can dance to ABBA!)

Exclusive American Council on Exercise (ACE) Research Proves Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Can Be a Tremendous Workout

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Feb. 6, 2008 – Based on the growing popularity of video games that eliminate conventional hand controllers in favor of more full-body interaction, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) put Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) to the test.
The ACE commissioned research out of the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, focused on quantifying DDR’s potential physical benefits. Looking at the caloric expenditure data of 24 volunteers, researchers determined that it is comparable to many other aerobic activities and could result in significant weight loss if used regularly.

Led by John Porcari, Ph.D., FACSM and Anna Norlin, M.S., male and female subjects, ages 12 –25 years old were recruited for the study. Half the volunteers were under the age of 18 and enlisted from the local La Crosse Boys & Girls Club.

Based on the physiological responses to three levels of DDR, all subjects showed a marked increase in exercise intensity as they participated. Adult participants burned more calories, which can be attributed to differences in body weight since the adults averaged about 25 pounds heavier than teenage subjects.

On average, subjects burned: 5.9 kcal/min on light mode, comparable to an easy walk on a treadmill. 6.7 kcal/min on standard mode, equivalent to riding a bike about 12 to 14 miles and hour and 8.1 kcal/min on difficult mode, similar to the benefits people get with high-impact aerobics.

All study participants, regardless of their experience with DDR, were required to practice a pre-determined four song dance sequence for up to six hour-long practice sessions or until their could demonstrate proficiency. Testing included continuously monitoring all participants of their oxygen uptake, heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion.

Researchers used a home-based version of the game called DDR Extreme 2 ($35; musicineverydirection.com) for Sony PlayStation 2 ($150; playstions.com) with a $40 dance pad.

For a detailed summary of the study as seen in the Sept. /Oct. 2007 issue of ACE Fitness Matters visit http://www.acefitness.org/cp/pdfs/Fi...ers/Sept07.pdf.

I love playing DDR. My friend and I are working on losing weight together (TANGENT: It is SO much more fun to lose weight WITH someone), and she comes over all the time to play DDR with me. I've actually gotten pretty good at it, and now I'm not embarrassed to play it in arcades with people watching.. because I'm fairly confident I can kick their butts! It's really exhausting, but the more I do it, the longer I can last.

My friend is also overweight, and we would play DDR late into the night[much to the sometimes irritation of my parents, for my friend is not light footed] and it made it so much more fun, though I think it works like that no matter what you do to lose it. you have fun with a diet buddy. It was nice though, and DDR has definitely helped me out.

I love DDR! But the problem for me is that I'm a big guy, so I look mega goofy playing it.

Who cares? I'm a big girl, and I jump all around and get all sweaty. People actually compliment me on it and tell me I did a great job, no one seems to care how stupid I look.

LOLZ - yeah I play it... I LOVE the game but too bad I dun really have time lately to play it. I can go on for hours and even though my calves hurt like MAD I still jump and jump and yeah it DOES make me lose weight

Actually I noticed a 1/2 inch change in my waste after playing it for 3 hours for 3 days

I'm kinda stuck on the 1/2 arrows though... the screen starts looking all jumbled up at one point

I love the DDR, too, although my mats are a bit old (of course my messing up is their fault, not mine!!). I had to buy an (ahem) male support device for my friend so he could play it without. He looked REALLY goofy before he had that little help.
