Protien Supplements and weight loss?

I am overweight by 3 pounds. I have been doing weight training since the last 7 months and somebody recommended having protein supplements to increase my capacity to lift weights and thus build up muscle mass faster.

Can any one advice if its a good idea to start taking protein supplements considering that I need to loose weight and protein supplements have lots of calories. I don't want to increase body fat and more weight with muscle mass. I hardly do any cardiovascular exercises.

Protein powders are actually pretty low calorie. Usuallly about 120 calories per serving. One great tasting favorite of mine is Optimum Nutrition Strawberry.

If you're not getting enough protein through your food sources then you may want to consider supplementing with a powder. However they are not magic, and are not goign to miraculously add muscle to your body.

I would also do a search. I'm sure a search for the word "powder" and posts made by me would turn up some info.

Not familiar with it. The whey protein I use has never made me sick, in fact it makes me feel pretty darn good.

I use whey protein after immediately after workouts and occasionally as a meal replacement especially for breakfast because I am notoriously lazy about breakfast. As a weight loss supplement I would think the advantages would be

Meal replacement: I had a protein smoothy this morning, it was 183 calories and had 2 servings of fruit, 1 of dairy, and 26g of protein. Thats a good bit of nutrition for those calories. I was also full.

Protein supplement: A lot of dieters find that eating healthy is easier when leaning towards the vegetarian side. If you cut out the burgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. a lot of peoples protein intake goes down. Ideally you should get protein from real food but if you are coming up short, take a supplement.

Just remember. It is a supplement. Not a medicine. If you go recipe hunting beware. Some of those protein shakes are damn delicious and can have 500-1000 calories.

Either you meant to type 13 or 30 or this must be a joke.
