Rep Power: 0 | | | Do I need an exercise bike? Firstly, let me apologize if this is the wrong forum.
Now, I'm 6', 263 pounds, with a lot of body fat and little upper body muscle. I'm a real mess.
Last week I started with the treadmill, a real bike, exercise ball and weights. I'm also using the '6 meals a day' thing.
Last week I lost 4 pounds and I feel GREAT!
I'd like to keep riding my bike, however it's getting pretty cold out, and I don't have the money right now to buy a stationary bike. I know there's a device that lifts the back wheel off the ground, turning it, essentially, into a stationary bike. Anybody know where I can get this thing? Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is the closest city.
Thank you,

You're looking for a bike trainer, like one of these. (Stick to the A-frame style trainers, which clamp onto the rear wheel. The roller trainers are used more by racers.)
Sometimes we have used ones in for sale at the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society, but I don't think I've seen any recently. If you e-mail info@edmontonbikes.ca or call the shop at 780-433-BIKE (2453), you can ask someone if there are any bike trainers available.
You can also check the classifieds for trainers.
It sounds like you're not actually in Edmonton proper, but if you're interested, EBC is having several winter riding workshops in the coming weeks. In the winter cycling seminar, we'll be going over how to dress, how to choose routes, and how to prepare your bike for winter, as well as any other questions that come up. Then we'll have a tire-studding workshop where we teach you how to stud your own tires. Coming up right away, we're also having a DIY retroreflective clothing workshop, where we'll be adding custom-shaped retroreflective material to our clothing.
So if you don't want to abandon outdoor riding altogether, you don't have to! And, as a winter cyclist of several years, I can happily report that biking in the winter burns an enormous number of calories. My problem in the winter is actually not being able to consume enough calories before my stomach gets full.
Hope that's helpful.
Cheers,
Chris |

Rep Power: 0 | | Thanks, Chris, that A-Frame is just what I was looking for. Pricey, though. And while the tire-studding workshop sounds great, it's usually -40 to -50 here in the Northwest Territories in winter, so cycling isn't the healthiest idea!
In the meantime, I think I'll continue with treadmill running, I'm having great success with it!

Rep Power: 0 | | My suggestion would be that the gym is the perfect place to exercise on those bikes. The ones at the gym have calorie trackers, number of miles run, etc. But it's up to you. I have lost approximately 20 pounds so far using mainly the stationary bike, along with some treadmill cardio. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | My friend uses the stationary bike. The stand it goes on was reasonably priced.
I still prefer the thread mill though. |
