when i do crunches with my hands behind my head, by the third set i will be forced to bend my neck, which brings pain. But i have started to do crunches with hands by my sides forming fists. And i still feel the same burn feeling. Can i do crunches this way and get the same result?

Of course you can. In fact chiropactors prefer you did. The muscles are still being used, thats what matters.

and, to assist, focus on a point on the ceiling about 45 degrees from the wall, as you do your situps ... this will help reduce any neck injury
