does milk really help you lose weight?

Sorry, I'm just full of questions tonight! :P

So does 24oz of milk a day really help with weight loss like the comercials say?

Because I drink water allllll day, and lately I've been having a glass of milk with dinner to change things up a bit, thinking that maybe it does really help somehow.

But if it doesn't really do anything, then I'd rather just drink orange juice or something like that instead.

I'm not sure but I went to 2424milk.com and they have some really good resources- meal plans, calculators, etc. On the website I didn't see anything saying exactly WHY milk helps you lose weight. So I googled it and got this article:

"A recent study has found that women with the highest intake of calcium from dairy foods lost the most weight and body fat over a 2 year period, regardless of how much they exercised. The findings, which were published in the December 2000 issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

The calcium/body fat connection is not new. Previous research has established a link, finding that those who with the highest calcium intake typically have lower levels of body fat.

The study focused on calcium from dairy products, and what the exact relationship is has not been established. "

Source: Should You Get More Calcium to Lose Weight?

So I'm thinking that you don't necessarily have to drink milk, but just get more calcium.

Exclamatio is an unknown quantity at this point
milk is not good for you at all
unless of couse you are an infant and you are drinking your mothers milk then it is bad for you

with the exeption maybe of soya or some powedered milks

milk is not good in the slightest, take cows milk for example, are you a cow? no. your body annot break down cows milk well enough to even beginning to absorb any of the nutrition

why is milk so popular and marketed so much?
its cheap to get, farming has always been cheap and thats 1 of the major benefits, however milk is bad for you

humans are the only animal to even drink milk past infancy, we are also the only animal to drink milk that originally came from another animal!

what about all the steroids etc the cows are given? that goes right through their system and into you

what about all the pesticides on the cows food that also goes into the milk and into you?

do some research into milk and you will see for yourself how bad it is

I'm going to need a more convincing argument to quit drinking milk. Just because I'm not a cow doesn't mean I can't absorb the protein and calcium in milk. And I might feel a little silly breast feeding at 31 years of age.

I've yet to find a non animal rights study that shows milk is bad for you. I'm pretty sure whey is made of milk as well, so I'm consuming a ton of milk and I have yet to see any ill effects.

It's sort of confusing for members to come on here and be told this is bad, that is bad, everything is bad. Every day you live is one day closer to dying, so it's all bad! If you like milk, and don't intend to take calcium supplements, drink up. If you are opposed to milk, drink soy. I doubt either one is going to kill you.

sensationalist propoganda AT BEST. Steroids given to dairy cows? I think not. At least not at the 6 farms that I know and I have intimate knowledge of the dairy industry, since I married into a dairy farming family.

First off, no steroids or other hormones are given to any of the cows on any of the farms that I know. Second, pesticides in the feed, sure there reportedly are some BUT first and foremost its not detected in the milk. Secondly, feeding the cows feed only happens during milking.......its kind of what gets them in the barn, so 90% of the time they are grazing pature that is grown and never sprayed with any pesticeds, or hay that was grown by the farmer and never sprayed with pesticides.

And to state that the human body can not break down milk to get any nutrients is absolutely laughable.

But this has to be my favorite "humans are the only animal to even drink milk past infancy, we are also the only animal to drink milk that originally came from another animal!" Its called the ability to reason, I'm sure you've heard of that little thing that seperates us from them

If you want healthy bones and teeth, milk is the best, plus it is good. And drinking a glass of skim milk or even 1% is good for you, and can help you stay healthy as you age!!! plus what else would you have with oatmeal, special K, grape nuts ect???? Milk is awsome and should be included in a healthy diet menu!!!!!

sounds like u guys have an ace setup going
im lucky enough to live near several great farms too
its also worth noting that i do drink milk too

however its not half as great as its made up to be at all, i suggest every1 read up on it if they are really bothered

i fail to see how your argument about human reasoning comes into the play though, tell that to the ozone for a start

its like the old cereal is good for you argument, load of old tripe :P

I don't drink milk - I use to, but gave it up after doing research on milk about 8-9 years ago. I do believe it is a propoganda myth that "Milk, it does a body good."

Dairy (especially hard cheese) has a lot of calcium in it, and that's why it's the number one suggestion for increasing your calcium intake, however, I have read repeatedly that our bodies do not absorb the calcium from milk well and that a better source of calcium would be from dark green leafy vegies or dried beans.

We do absorb nutrients from milk, our bodies just absorb calcium better from other sources due to the calcium/magnesium ratio. Also, there are calcium inhibitors that are common in the western diet (coffee, sodas, refined sugars, excess sodium, etc), these things hinder the body's ability to absorb calcium.

I'm not sure what "steroids" Exclamatio would be referring to - but there has been an issue with rBGH given to dairy cows. It's a Bovine Growth Hormone by Monsanto that increases production of milk in the cows. This increased production causes massive ulcerations and infections on the udders which the pus and blood gets into the milking process. It then has to be treated with antibiotics, which also gets into the milk.

Hence the big hooplah over buying Organic Milk - or milk from cows not treated with rBGH/antibiotics.

All in all, I think an unbiased survey of milk is still out, it is considered to be a factor in ovarian & prostate cancer - but most surveys are all too short to be considered viable yet.

Here's an article from Harvard University that presents pros & cons without a lot of bias from either side...

From my experience, water is a lot more useful. Before getting on a diet, I didn't drink much water ( just a few litres ), but when I have started being on diet, I drink up to five litres a day and it helps. However, the result won't appear that quick. Give ur body time for a month for a result, but remember to watch your plate during the day, too. Permanent weight loss without a yo-yo effect needs more than just eating lifestyle but regular exercise as well.
